Arrived at the school in the 3rd term of 1967, and immediately was recruited into the school band, where I worked
very closely with Bertie Lockhart, re-writing the words for the school song – from “God Bless the Prince of Wales” to
“God Bless Nairobi School”. Was head of brass for two years and did O-level music thanks only to Bertie’s efforts
which were reciprocated by regular visits to his house to wash his dogs whilst hoping for a sight of his lovely
daughters.
Remember pushing the ‘sumuni’ across the prefects’ common room floor with the nose, whilst being encouraged with
wet rams-tails! Always trying to get to the front of the queue at the tuck shop to get the limited supply of
warm sausage rolls – made easier in the 4th form when the studies were right next to the tuck shop. The annual
dormitory fight when they opened the doors between Clive and Scott, when all hell broke loose – armed with hockey
balls, and whatever came to hand.
Played every sport possible for house and school, especially 1st XI cricket and 1st XV rugby, which I continued at
Impala Club on returning to Kenya in 1974 where I taught at Braeburn House School.
Emigrated to South Africa in January 1977 and settled in Johannesburg ostensibly for two years. 33 years later, still
here running a financial services practise. Married to Sandra with three children – Shaun, Kimberley and Lexi.
In what spare time I have I enjoy visits to the bush, fly fishing and holidays down the coast at our place in Natal.
Would be pleased to organise and challenge any Old Cambrians to a game of golf at one of our magnificent golf
courses in South Africa. Also would like to get together with any Joburg OCs – perhaps we can have lunch at the
Wanderers Club sometime ........ please contact me via the Webmaster if you’re interested.
